Why The Raiders Need to Avoid Any Sherman Deal
Seattle Seahawks corner Richard Sherman is a confirmed member of the NFL trade block. It is reported and confirmed by team brass and Sherman that the Seahawks are at least exploring the idea of trading Sherman. As for the Oakland Raiders, speculation surround them as a fit. The Raiders have a young team, salary cap and allowed too many big plays via their weak secondary.
Thus, Sherman could make sense for Oakland. The Stanford alumni did play college football in the Bay. He also has ties to the Raiders through former Seahawks linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. and former Seattle player Bruce Irvin.
Therefore, Sherman’s availability warrants serious consideration from the Oakland Raiders. However, there are a few reasons why the Raiders should pass on Seattle’s Pro Bowl corner.
Price tag
First, we know Draft picks are Reggie McKenzie’s most precious possessions. For this reason, he passes on trades for established players
Rumors swirl that the Seahawks want a high draft pick and a player for Sherman. Even if the Raiders negotiate that down to a second or third round pick and a starting defensive back like Sean Smith or David Amerson, that is too much for Sherman.
You’re talking about giving up a starting NFL corner and another potential starter for a 29-year-old corner with a cap hit over $13 million. Granted, Oakland still have more than $30 million in cap space, but that money needs to go to extensions for Derek Carr and Khalil Mack. Hence, the Raiders are better off trying to acquire the next Sherman via the NFL Draft.
Draft
Speaking of the Draft, the 2017 class bursts with great defensive backs. This is probably why the Seahawks are exploring the idea of moving on from Sherman.
The Raiders could add a starting corner in rounds one thru three. Defensive backs Kevin King, Quincy Wilson and Garson Conley could make sense for Oakland in the first round. Corners Desmond King, Adoree Jackson and Teez Tabor could become starters out of the second round. Rasul Douglas, Josh Johnson and Howard Wilson would also make sense in the third round.

Thus, the Raiders are not desperate enough to trade for Sherman. They can improve their defense by selecting a number of guys in the NFL Draft. Remember, Seattle chose Sherman in the fifth round.
