White Sox 5, Phillies 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Alexei Ramirez drove in the go-ahead run with his fourth hit, a two-out double in the top of the 11th inning, as the Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Ramirez's hit drove in Alejandro De Aza, who had tripled off J.C. Ramirez (0-1), the fifth Philadelphia pitcher. It allowed the White Sox to snap a 3-3 tie and propelled them toward their third victory in four games.
Ramirez, who went 4-for-6, then scored on an error by Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
Ramon Troncoso (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory. Addison Reed allowed Humberto Quintero's RBI single in the bottom of the 11th but earned his 24th save.
Darin Ruf tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh for the Phillies (46-48), who were attempting to reach the .500 mark for the first time since June 7, when they were 31-31.
The game was delayed 41 minutes by rain in the middle of the ninth.
The Phillies were unable to score after putting runners at second and third with none out in the ninth, and second and third with one out in the 10th.
The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the first, as Domonic Brown and Delmon Young drove in runs with a groundout and single, respectively.
But the White Sox rallied against Philadelphia starter Jonathan Pettibone, scoring twice in the fifth on De Aza's RBI double and once more in the sixth on Conor Gillaspie's sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead.
Ruf then concluded an eight-pitch at-bat in the bottom of the seventh by stroking a 2-2 changeup from White Sox starter John Danks over the center field fence for a game-tying homer. It was Ruf's second homer in seven games since his recall from the minors.
Danks, who was seeking his 60th victory, went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs and eight hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Pettibone worked six innings and gave up three runs and six hits. He struck out six and walked four.
NOTES: Phillies CF Ben Revere went 2-for-6 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. It was his seventh multi-hit game in the last nine, and 15th in the last 28. ... Chicago's Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to eight games. ... The White Sox recalled LHP Donnie Veal from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day to fill the roster spot vacated when LHP Matt Thornton was traded to Boston on Friday. Veal came on in relief in the eighth inning and retired Brown on a fly to left.
