The Pokémon Go craze has spread to the Phillie Phanatic

Pokémon Go is everywhere right now, so you’re probably aware that it’s the newest mobile gaming craze, even if you’re not totally sure what it is. (It’s an augmented reality game where you use your phone or tablet to capture little Pokémon monsters out in the real world, and then you train and fight them.) If you don’t play it, you probably know someone who does. And if you don’t know someone who plays it, you’ve probably heard of Mike Trout, and he definitely plays Pokémon Go.

But it’s not stopping with Mike Trout. Pokémon Go has now spread to the MLB mascots, and it started on Tuesday night with a skit from the Phillie Phanatic. The furry green monster who reps the Philadelphia Phillies took out his iPad between innings and started wandering the field at Citizens Bank Park, trying to find and catch a Pokémon.

Since you need to look through the camera on your device to see these pocket monsters, the Phanatic had his trumpet snout squarely focused on the screen in front of him as he was walking the field. That’s why he didn’t see the enormous yellow Pikachu scampering around just yards away. Instead of catching the Pokémon, the Phanatic walked directly into umpire Laz Diaz and fell flat on his back, and the Pikachu got away. (No umpires were harmed during the performance of this skit.)

It makes sense that the Phillie Phanatic would be the first mascot to get on board with Pokémon Go. He looks like he could actually be a Pokémon. Actually, has anyone checked to make sure he’s not a Pokémon?! Someone needs to do some research on this.
