The Ottawa Senators were looking for a forward to help their depth and fill the spot of the sidelined Clarke MacArthur and hope they’ve found one in Tommy Wingels.

Wingels was part of a deal Tuesday that saw the San Jose Sharks send the 28-year-old to the Senators in exchange for minor leaguers Buddy Robinson and Zack Stortini, along with a seventh-rounder in 2017. The Sharks will pick up 30 percent of what’s left of Wingels’ $2.6 million salary this season.

“Tommy has been a valuable member of our franchise for many years, a phenomenal teammate and a true role model on and off the ice for our organization and the NHL,” said Sharks GM Doug Wilson in a statement. “As a team evolves and younger players push for roster spots, unfortunately tough decisions have to be made. We wish Tommy and his wife, Molly, nothing but success in the future.

“We also want to welcome Buddy and Zach to our organization. They add size and depth to our reserve list and we look forward to having them in San Jose.”

According to the Senators, Wingels, who’s in the final year of his contract, will travel to Ottawa Wednesday and could make his debut for the club on Thursday when they host the Calgary Flames.

In 37 games this season Wingels has five goals and eight points while averaging just over 10 minutes a game, his lowest since entering the NHL. The play of Timo Meier and Kevin Labanc up front helped to make Wingels expendable.

From the Sharks perspective, this likely opens a spot for Tomas Hertl to return from his lower-body injury that’s sidelined him since the middle of November.
