Evander Kane will miss “weeks,” according to Buffalo Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma, after the forward slammed into the end boards during Thursday’s opener against the Montreal Canadiens.

Toward the end of the second period Kane chased after a puck into the Montreal zone with defensemen Alexei Emelin. The two bumped, Kane lost and edge and crashed.

He left the game and did not return. According to Bylsma, Kane has three cracked ribs, an injury that could affect the forward even when he’s back in the Sabres’ lineup.

“In the oblique area, it’s going to be something that you deal with even when you come back with rotation and the discomfort,” Bylsma said via the Buffalo News.

Kane joins Jack Eichel (6-8 weeks) and day-to-day teammates Dmitry Kulikov and Kyle Okposo as Sabres players currently on the mend. Though in Okposo’s case he is expected to make his debut with the team on Sunday against Edmonton.
