Rookies relish the heat at Texans minicamp

Houston’s draft picks and free agent signees got a small taste of the South Texas heat as they participated in their first minicamp practice this afternoon. It was a balmy day by Houston standards, but the mercury still hit the mid 80’s. The players weren’t concerned about that though. They were just happy to put on a Texans practice jersey and get to work.

Coaches met with all the draftees, free agents, practice squad players, and guys trying out on Thursday night and Friday morning. They then hit the field on Friday afternoon to run through some drills. Coach Bill O’Brien talked about the first day and how he plans to get the group ready for more intense practices down the road.

“The initial message is about putting the team first and thinking about what you can do for the team to create your own role,” O’Brien said. “We put them in a role, but how do they embrace that role? How do they create value for themselves on the team? After their college season, they’ve gone from getting ready for an individual deal like the combine and all the different pro days. Now they’ve got to become a part of a team.”

O’Brien went on to say this after the Friday’s practice.

“Yeah, good first day,” he said. “(This) is a hard-working group. They have no idea yet what it means to practice the way we practice. It’s not their fault. They’re just out here for the first day. But we’re off to a good start as far as teaching them the way we do things, and I think we’re excited about this group.”

There’s not a lot to glean from just one practice, but the players were very excited to get going. Here are some more quotes and tweets from Friday’s minicamp.
