Report: Redmond leading candidate for Marlins job
Former Miami Marlins catcher Mike Redmond reportedly has the inside track on the team's managerial job.
Redmond, 41, who has managed the last two seasons for the Class A Dunedin (Fla.) Blue Jays, is the leading candidate, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Wednesday, citing an industry source.
"I think it will be Redmond," the source said in a text message.
Redmond was interviewing Wednesday night for the job that became vacant last week when the Marlins fired manager Ozzie Guillen after one season. Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus and Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar, also former major league catchers, are considered the other top candidates.
The Sun-Sentinel reported Redmond also is expected to interview for the Toronto Blue Jays job, which opened this week when manager John Farrell was traded to the Boston Red Sox. The Rockies are reportedly interested in interview Ausmus while the Blue Jays are eying Alomar.
Redmond, 41, would become the majors' youngest manager if he was hired.
Guillen came to the Marlins at the end of last season after managing the Chicago White Sox for eight years. His brief stay in Miami was doomed from the start when he praised Fidel Castro in a magazine interview, drawing a five-game suspension from major league baseball and the ire of the Cuban-American community.
A dismal season ended with a 69-93 record and last-place finish in the National League East. Guillen had three years remaining on a four-year, $10 million contract.
