Report: Knicks' Stoudemire expected to be out 6-8 weeks
New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire is expected to miss at least the first six weeks of the season after his injured left knee was re-examined, ESPN.com reported Monday.
The Knicks initially expected Stoudemire to be sidelined for only two to three weeks after he ruptured a popliteal cyst behind his knee in a preseason game on Oct. 19.
But, according to the ESPN.com report, Stoudemire received a second opinion over the weekend from the Phoenix Suns team doctor, Thomas Carter, who performed microfracture surgery on Stoudemire's knee in 2005.
After Carter's examination, it was determined Stoudemire would need additional time to recover, and it could be up to eight weeks before he returns to action.
The Knicks open the regular season Thursday against the Nets in Brooklyn. They are expected to make an official announcement regarding Stoudemire on Tuesday.
In 2010, the New York Knicks signed Stoudemire to a five-year, $100 million contract, but the forward has been slowed by injuries. He played in 47 games last season, averaging 17.5 points and 7.8 rebounds. The scoring average was his lowest for a full season since his rookie season in 2002-03, and the rebounding average was the lowest in his career.
