Recap: Seattle Seahawks defeat San Francisco 49ers because…they should

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday 25-23. Unfortunately, the New Orleans Saints lost to the Atlanta Falcons as well which means the Seahawks will not get a first round-round bye for the playoffs. Seattle will get a home playoff game in the first-round, however. Who the Seahawks play remains in doubt until later today and depends on the Green Packers and Detroit Lions outcome.

The Story: An odd season ends in an odd way.

Comedian Eddie Izzard has this bit about Queen Mary. In the bit Izzard as a plumber has told the Queen what kind of work he does. The Queen responds basically as, “Fantastic! You’re a plumber? What on Earth is that?”

That also sums up the Seahawks season. Seattle finished the regular season by making the playoffs but who really are the Seahawks? In the 49ers game Seattle had yet another kick blocked. The team did crap on the ground offensively. Receiver Doug Baldwin had two catches. San Francisco had a 14-3 lead. And yet even after all that, one could feel the Seahawks comfortably won.

Seattle came back from that 14-3 deficit and led 25-16 in the fourth quarter. Really, the most interesting thing that happened in the fourth quarter was the near-fight that Seattle’s defensive players Frank Clark and Jarran Reed had. Ok, so it was not a near-fight. The fracas that happened on the sidelines after Reed drew a late and unnecessary 15-yard penalty almost shows more that Clark is developing into a leader in the defensive unit.

The 49ers had nearly 130 total yards after scoring early in the second quarter and appeared to be in control. After that score, not so much. San Francisco finished with 253 total yards and never threatened after that second quarter score. Why? Who knows?

As with almost any Seahawks win, and really…any Seahawks season, breaking down the numbers means absolutely nothing.

What we do know is the Seahawks are in the playoffs again. Do they look good enough to beat any playoff foe? No. This, of course, means they will end up winning the Super Bowl.

MVP: Bobby Wagner

Let us just say this, Wagner is a ridiculous freakish beast and has emerged into the Seahawks’ best defensive player since Thomas is no longer involved. Wagner had two sacks against the 49ers, along with 12 total total tackles and a fumble recovery. Wagner changes games. Wagner makes big, important tackles. Wagner is the best linebacker in today’s National Football League.

Play of the Game:

So, this happened…

Why does this seem so easy? Does it not seem as if Jimmy Graham could be available for this every play? Try it, Seahawks. Just try it.

Tweet of the Week:

As mentioned above, there was a Seahawks fracas on the sidelines. This is what Stephen Cohen of Seattle PI found…

One last thing…Go Hawks!
