QB Ryan Mallet Knows his Role
Everyone–especially Ravens backup QB Ryan Mallet– knows that the life of an NFL quarterback can be forever changed in a split second. This dynamic is even more apparent to that rare specimen in the 2nd string slot. You know, the guy that everyone cheers for and wants to see when the number one guy has what they consider an off season. The backup quarterback is the hero that hasn’t had his cape torn yet. I’m just curious: can anyone name the backup quarterback for half the NFL, or maybe five of the top NFL teams? I thought that might be a tough question.
The Baltimore Ravens are thankful that they don’t have to answer that question for themselves any longer as Ryan Mallet has made the most of his second chance. He now understands more than ever what it means to be a professional as he uses his breakout performance against Pittsburgh in 2015 and the additional preparation time of OTA’s as a spring board for the 2016 season. Mallet recently shared some insight on his new game plan with Baltimore Ravens.com. “I’m preparing like I’m the starter,” Mallett said. “It’s what I grew up doing. The past five years hasn’t been like that, so it’s definitely a comfortable feeling for me.”

Coming out of the University of Arkansas, Mallet was seen as a prospect that had all the physical tools and just needed a chance to mature. In his first two stops in New England and then in Houston there were flashes of brilliance but the whole package just didn’t seem to come together.
The Ravens’ team-first philosophy and the added responsibility of following in Joe Flacco’s footsteps has ignited a new competitive flame in Ryan Mallet’s heart. “It’s been one of my best offseasons since I’ve been in the league. I feel light years ahead after being here for the whole offseason and starting here in OTAs and football school. I think it’s good for me to be in the offense longer,” Mallet said. “To come out here and get in the huddle with these guys I’d be playing with, it’s good for me to get the timing down for training camp and preseason and everything.”
Ryan Mallet has landed in Baltimore and is ready to do his part as the Ravens backup quarterback to contribute to a championship atmosphere so that there will be more than one highlight to remember him by when it’s all said and done.
