Pac-12 reprimands ASU-Wisconsin officials
The Pac-12 announced Monday it is reprimanding and taking additional sanctions against officials in the Arizona State-Wisconsin football game that ended with the Sun Devils claiming a 32-30 win without the Badgers having the chance to attempt a potential game-winning field goal.
The clock was allowed to run out after Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave kneeled to down the ball with 18 seconds remaining. Arizona State pounced on the ball and coach Todd Graham said he thought Wisconsin fumbled the ball.
Sun Devils' linebacker Anthony Jones laid on the ball for at least six seconds. By the time he stood up and Wisconsin got set, time had expired.
"It's a shame that it went down that way," Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen said Saturday.
Officials huddled quickly before ruling the game was over.
"This was an unusual situation to end the game," said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott in a release. "After a thorough review, we have determined that the officials fell short of the high standard in which Pac-12 games should be managed. We will continue to work with all our officials to ensure this type of situation never occurs again."
