NFL-National Football League roundup

Sept 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The Dallas Cowboys still have Tony Romo on the 53-man roster. Sunday was the first day that the Cowboys could have placed Romo on injured reserve and the team opted not to do so. At the same time, the signing of veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez was officially announced and young quarterback Jameill Showers was waived. Sanchez was signed for one season to be the backup after being released by the Denver Broncos on Saturday. Rookie Dak Prescott will be the starter when the Cowboys face the New York Giants in their season opener on Sept. 11. Romo suffered a compression fracture in his back in a preseason game against Seattle on Aug. 25. It is estimated that he will be sidelined 6-to-10 weeks. If Romo is placed on injured reserve, he will be forced to miss the first eight weeks of the NFL season and won't be eligible to play until November. The Cowboys could choose not to place Romo on injured reserve and name him as one of their inactives each week until he recovers. - - - Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has won the appeal of his 10-game suspension for another violation of the NFL's substance-abuse police and will only be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. The league affirmed Gregory's four-game suspension, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. An NFL spokesman told the newspaper that the league would have no further comment on Gregory beyond what was announced on Feb. 19 when the four-game suspension was revealed. The NFL has not yet provided the second-year pass rusher with official notice that his appeal succeeded, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder. Gregory's status for the 2016 season remains uncertain. The former Nebraska star was placed on the reserve/did not report list before training camp in July. - - - Four-time Pro Bowl return specialist Devin Hester has agreed to a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Hester, 33, who worked out for the Ravens for a second straight day on Saturday, holds the NFL records with 20 return (punt and kickoff combined) touchdowns and 14 punt return touchdowns. - - - The Pittsburgh Steelers placed Bud Dupree on the team's Reserve/Injured List. The second-year linebacker did not play in the preseason and missed most of training camp because of a groin injury. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Dupree is having surgery to fix a core muscle tear. Linebacker Steven Johnson, who was previously released, re-signed with the team to fill Dupree's roster spot on the 53-man roster. - - - The Tennessee Titans added depth to their tight end position by claiming tight end Jace Amaro off waivers from the New York Jets. Amaro, a 2014 second-round pick out of Texas Tech, was released by the Jets on Saturday. He joins tight ends Delanie Walker, Anthony Fasano and Phillip Supernaw on the Titans' roster.
