Navy 63, Delaware State 53

Brandon Venturini scored 12 of his game-high 14 points off 3-pointers in leading Navy to a 63-53 win Saturday over Delaware State in the final game for both teams at the South Padre Island Invitational.

The Midshipmen (3-4) broke a three-game losing streak with the win, while the Hornets (3-4) lost their fourth straight after winning their first three games of the season.

Worth Smith scored the Midshipmen's first eight points of the game. Midway through the first half, Phil Guglielmo and Kendall Knorr made consecutive 3-pointers as part of an 11-0 Navy run to go up by 16.

The Midshipmen extended the lead by as much as 18 points late in the first half, and went into the break with a 35-20 advantage over the Hornets.

Navy extended the lead over Delaware State to 24 points in the second half, with three straight 3-pointers by Venturini.

The Hornets closed the gap to 10 points late in the game on 3-pointers from Amere May and Jabari Joyner, but could get no closer.

Tilman Dunbar scored 11 points for the Midshipmen, who shot 24 of 53 from the field.

Navy held Delaware State to just 25 percent shooting (7 of 28) from the field in the first half, and just 35.7 percent for the game on 20-of-56 shooting.

Kendall Gray and Tyshawn Bell led the Hornets with 13 points apiece. Gray's day included a 6-of-10 effort from the field, and he added a game-high seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
