MLB Roundup: Three Rays pitchers, ump fined $1,000
Tampa Bay Rays pitchers David Price, Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore, and umpire Tom Hallion were fined $1,000 each Thursday by Major League Baseball for their involvement in an April 28 incident during a game.
Price claims Hallion used a profanity during a seventh-inning argument as Price walked toward the dugout. Hallion then ejected Hellickson for his comments from the Rays' dugout.
MLB vice president Joe Torre issued the punishment after reviewing the incident with the assistance of Peter Woodfork, who oversees MLB umpires, and Joe Garagiola, who handles player discipline.
"Honestly, that's not what I wanted," Price said. "I didn't want him to get fined. I didn't want him to get suspended. I wanted an apology. That's all I cared about."
--The New York Yankees placed reliever Joba Chamberlain on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, retroactive to April 28, with an oblique strain.
The 27-year-old compiled a 3.86 ERA in 9 1/3 innings this season, but allowed 10 hits and six walks. He is expected to miss three full weeks.
---Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Josh Johnson landed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with right triceps inflammation.
His absence will pave the way for left-hander Ricky Romero's return to the big leagues.
Johnson, 29, missed his scheduled start against the New York Yankees last week because of tightness in the triceps. An MRI that revealed no structural damage.
Reliever Brad Lincoln was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to fill Johnson's spot on the roster.
---Looking for infield reinforcements, the New York Yankees acquired third baseman Chris Nelson from the Colorado Rockies for future considerations. The Rockies will receive cash or a player to be named.
Nelson, 27, was batting .242 with a .600 OPS in 71 plate appearances this season. He hit .301 with a .352 on-base percentage in 345 at-bats in 2012.
---Padres third baseman Chase Headley "loves" San Diego and is happy to hear that the team loves him back. He just plans to wait until the offseason to discuss a contract extension.
"We made it abundantly clear [before] that we didn't want to talk about it during the season," Headley told MLB.com on Thursday. "I didn't think that for me and for the team that it was good to get caught up with all of this during the season."
On Wednesday, Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said he gave general manager Josh Byrnes permission to start talks on a long-term deal to make Headley the "highest-paid player in club history."
Also on Thursday, the Padres recalled reliever Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson.
---Miami Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday after missing two weeks with an elbow bruise.
The 24-year-old is batting just .184 this season.
The team also recalled outfielder Matt Diaz from Triple-A New Orleans and designated infielder Nick Green for assignment.
