MLB roundup: Blue Jays sign Encarnacion to 3-year deal
The Blue Jays and infielder Edwin Encarnacion agreed a three-year, $27 million contract, awarding him for his career season in 2012.
The 29-year-old is batting .295 with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs this season. Encarnacion can play first base and third base. He's tied for fifth in baseball in home runs and in the top 15 in runs batted in.
The signing puts to rest rumors that the Blue Jays were considering offering Encarnacion in a trade to acquire a starting pitcher.
--The Twins will reinstate closer Matt Capps from the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday night's game against the Athletics.
Capps was placed on the disabled list on June 25 (retroactive to June 24) with right shoulder inflammation. He pitched two innings in two rehab appearances at Class-A Ft. Myers.
To clear a spot on the active roster, the Twins optioned right-handed pitcher Kyle Waldrop to Triple-A Rochester.
Waldrop, recalled June 29, went 0-1 with three walks and one strikeout in four appearances with the Twins.
--Cardinals' right-handed pitcher Kyle McClellan will miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery Tuesday.
McClellan, on the disabled list since May with a right elbow strain, required surgery after he tore the labrum in his right shoulder during a throwing session.
A starter to begin the 2011 season, McClellan appeared in 43 games, including 26 out of the bullpen last season.
--Official ratings released for Tuesday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game showed a dip in viewership to record lows for the third straight year.
FOX drew a rating of 6.8 with an audience of 10.9 million, the third time in as many years the game has produced a new record-low audience.
The 8-0 National League victory was the third-greatest margin of victory in the 83-year history of the game.
The 2011 All-Star game had 10.973 million viewers with 12.118 million in 2010.
