Though it looks like an utmost certainty that Ryan Tannehill will be the team’s starting quarterback entering the season, there is still some decisions that need to be made about the Miami Dolphins quarterback position. Specifically, who will be the backup for the Dolphins entering week one.

Currently, the backup battle looks like this. Veteran Matt Moore – and former Miami Dolphins starting quarterback – and newly drafted rookie Brandon Doughty from Western Kentucky. Though both could make the week one roster, fewer teams are choosing to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster in recent years.

Should the Dolphins choose this route, it will likely be a top notch battle come training camp to see who the backup to Ryan Tannehill becomes.

Starting off with the veteran, Matt Moore has very little question marks next to his name. A one-year starter for the Miami Dolphins, Moore has otherwise been a career backup. The safe choice no doubt, but is he too safe of a pick.

It is highly unlikely that at this stage of his career, Moore will suddenly develop into a solid starting quarterback. Though he did a good enough job the one season he did start, Moore just doesn’t have the tools needed to be a dependable starting quarterback in the NFL.

With Matt Moore the safe pick for the backup position, Brandon Doughty becomes the riskier of the two options. That is not to say Doughty is a risky player, he is just the riskier of the two given the many question marks that will surround the rookie signal caller.

A two-time Conference USA MVP during his time at Western Kentucky, Doughty was a major league gunslinger in college. Following his four year career with the Hilltoppers, Doughty finished in the NCAA’s top 25 all-time for passing yards, passing touchdowns and completion percentage.

Should his collegiate form manage to transfer nicely into the NFL, Brandon Doughty – with some fine tooling by new head coach Adam Gase – could give the Miami Dolphins a formidable option at quarterback in the future.

That leads us here though, should Doughty not develop as you hope he does and Ryan Tannehill were go down with injury, the Miami Dolphins will sorely miss Matt Moore. However, should the shot in the dark payoff, this move could be hailed as a game changer for the Dolphins franchise.

While both Matt Moore and Brandon Doughty could make the Miami Dolphins roster this season, let’s assume there is only one spot available. Between the two quarterbacks, which would you rather have as the team’s backup this season? Me personally, I’d go with Brandon Doughty due to his potential under quarterback guru Adam Gase.
