Mexico Olympic women's long jump competitor is Salma Hayek's cousin

For once, Salma Hayek will be the one watching.

The Mexican-American actress revealed on Instagram she will be keeping an eye on distant cousin Yvonne Treviño Hayek, who is scheduled to become Mexico’s first women’s long jump competitor in the Olympics since 1968 when the 27-year-old takes the oval for Wednesday’s qualifying event.

“I’m excited to see my cousin, Yvonne Treviño Hayek, (who I haven’t had the pleasure to meet yet) to compete representing Mexico for the long jump at the Olympics next week. Viva Las Hayeks!!” the “From Dusk Till Dawn” star wrote Sunday. Salma added, “Estoy muy orgullosa,” or, “I’m very proud.”

It’s somewhat understandable she hasn’t yet met her cousin, since Yvonne is the granddaughter of Salma’s father’s cousin, and the Olympian is 22 years younger than soon-to-be 50-year-old actress.

Then again, Yvonne has been on the radar for quite some time now. She’s a three-time Mexican national long jump champion, first winning in 2011, and broke the country’s record with a leap of 21 feet, 11.75 inches (6.70 meters) at Mexico’s national championships this past June. That jump would have placed her eighth at the 2012 London Olympics, so she has some ground to make up in Rio.

As for Salma, she’s no stranger to the Olympics. Currently the voice of a lesbian taco in the animated film “Sausage Party,” she told the New Zealand Herald in 2012 her father declined her invitation to be on Mexico’s Olympic gymnastics team as a child, for fear Salma wouldn’t have a normal childhood.

“They drafted me … to be part of the Olympic team!” Salma told the New Zealand Herald. “But I was eight or nine and my father said no because I would have had to go live in Mexico City in a boarding school for gymnasts, do six hours, eight hours a day of training, which for me was like paradise.”

Instead, the “Desperado” star’s father’s cousin’s granddaughter is living out her Olympic dream. Too bad things didn’t work out for Salma. She’ll have to settle for No. 32 on a list of 100 richest actresses. If Salma can’t spring for a jet down to Rio to meet Yvonne, maybe her billionaire husband will.
