Lions release TE Scheffler, sign OT Richardson

The Detroit Lions released veteran tight end Tony Scheffler and signed veteran offensive tackle Barry Richardson, the team announced Tuesday.

Scheffler had been sidelined the last two weeks with a concussion, but he was cleared to return from the concussion he suffered Oct. 6 against the Green Bay Packers. He had been with the Lions since the 2010 season.

Richardson is a five-year veteran and started all 48 games over the past three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams, 47 at right tackle. The 6-foot-6, 319-pound tackle signed with the Tennessee Titans this offseason, but was released after training camp.
