CALGARY, Alberta -- After his team's morning skate, Los Angeles Kings coach Darryl Sutter said of Trevor Lewis: "He's one of my favorites so I want him to produce."
The Kings forward picked the right time to answer his boss's wishes.
Lewis scored his first goal of the season late in the first period, 29 seconds after the Calgary Flames had tied the game, to put the Kings ahead for good in their 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Kings captain Dustin Brown opened the scoring, but Calgary drew even when defenseman T.J. Brodie later in the first period, with his first goal of the year.
Before Brodie's score could be announced to the home crowd, Lewis was on the spot for a rebound opportunity and put a sharp-angled shot past Flames goalie Joey MacDonald.
Jeff Carter also scored for the Kings (7-6-2), who beat the Edmonton Oilers and the Flames on consecutive nights.
The Flames (5-7-3) have won only two of nine home games this season.
Jonathan Bernier made 26 saves to earn the win, while MacDonald stopped 31 shots.
NOTES: Flames defenseman Mark Giordano said his first instinct on the play, which earned him a $10,000 fine, was he should have been called for holding. After watching a replay of the slew-foot he dealt Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel, he understood the uproar. "I realize when you look at the replay it wasn't too great, especially being that close to the boards, but there wasn't an injury on the play and I'm glad for that. I'll try not to make that play again," Giordano said. ... Kings defenseman Keaton Ellerby, who is from the Calgary area, had to pay for 17 tickets for family who were on hand to see him play his first NHL game at the Saddledome. "It's going to be a pricey night. I'm paying to play this game," Ellerby said. ... Brodie scored his first goal of the season, which seems to be a trend for the Flames. It marked the fourth consecutive score by a Calgary player, which was their first goal of the season ... Calgary captain Jarome Iginla, who went into the game with just one goal in the first 14 games, had seven shots on goal through the first two periods. The rest of his teammates had combined for eight through 40 minutes.
