Cowboys: Battle for #2 receiver will be heated

One of the hottest battles of the Dallas Cowboys summer will be at wide receiver. It’s no secret Dez Bryant will be the number-one but who will follow him at the #2 spot? Some may think it’s obvious but training camp will be a heavyweight fight for the number two spot in my opinion.

Terrance Williams has been outstanding for the Dallas Cowboys in spurts. The key word in my last sentence was “spurts.” Since being drafted in 2013, Terrance Williams’ career for the Cowboys has been a roller coaster. My first memory of Terrance Williams was his fumble against the Chargers in 2013, during a critical moment in the fourth quarter. Then he bounced back the following week against the Broncos, going for 151 yards with one touchdown.

This lead to a touchdown streak from week 5 to week 10. After week 10 Williams went scoreless and had minimal yards to close out his rookie year. In 2014 Williams could have been considered “Mr. Clutch” no one will ever forget his toe drag against the Seahawks on 3rd and forever.

Cowboys: Weekly Recap

No one will also forget his enormous game against the Detroit Lions in the Wild-card round when they held Dez in check. Williams scored two touchdowns, including the game-winning grab. Williams also scored the following week in Green Bay. In 2015, Williams was a disappointment. When Dez went down due to injuries everyone expected Williams to put up big numbers. His big game came during week 17 against the Redskins going for 173 yards on 8 catches. Williams only went for 70 or more yards three other times in 2015. Williams is under his contract year heading into the 2016 season. He is the favorite to claim the second WR spot but a man named Brice Butler is breathing down his back

Brice Butler was traded from Oakland last season to add depth when Dez went down. However, Butler didn’t produce as he was sidelined for most of the 2015 season. His big moment came during New Orleans during a 67-yard reception that he tweaked his hamstring on. Butler was inactive for 8 weeks after the New Orleans game. Butler had two decent games during his return. Butler went for four catches against Buffalo for 74 yards and then 4 catches against Washington for 60 yards. The front office loves the combination of his height(6’3) and speed. He has the physical attributes to be a great number two next to Dez with Beasley in the slot.

With a full offseason in Dallas under his belt, this is truly Butler’s time to steal the show. If Butler can show he can be a true number-two wide receiver, the Cowboys won’t have to overpay to keep Williams. I believe he will give Terrance Williams a true run for his money, literally. The real winner in this battle will be the Cowboys because of the simple fact that competition breeds excellence.
