Chicago Rush 48, San Antonio Talons 41
SAN ANTONIO -- In the first two weeks of the 2013 Arena Football League season, the Rush lost because their defense simply couldn't stop anyone.
At the Alamodome Friday night, Chicago earned its first win because its defense not only got off the field, but scored touchdowns.
Kelvin Morris and Brian McNally recorded defensive scores and the Rush offense did just enough to hold off San Antonio 48-41 to win the matchup of Central Division foes.
Morris returned a fumble 11 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, while McNally fell on a Rohan Davey fumble in the end zone in the third quarter, giving Chicago (1-2) a 42-21 advantage.
The Talons (0-2) rallied behind Davey, the former LSU star who replaced John Dutton (shoulder) in the second quarter. Davey led San Antonio to 20 straight points, including a 12-yard scoring strike to Burl Toler with 4:30 left in the game that cut the deficit to one.
But Semaj Moody blocked Stefan Demos' extra point kick and the Rush tacked on a vital touchdown when Carson Coffman connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Payne at the 1:35 mark.
Chicago's defense sealed the win on the Talons' last possession, Jorrick Calvin batting away Davey's fourth down pass for Jomo Wilson in the end zone with 22 seconds left. It was a major turnaround after yielding 139 points in home losses to Iowa and Spokane.
Coffman didn't post impressive numbers, hitting 16-of-38 passes for 199 yards, but finished with three touchdown passes. Rodney Wright caught six passes for 77 yards and two scores.
The Rush are at home for their next game, taking on Pittsburgh on April 14 at 3:05 p.m.
