Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right quadriceps. The team announced that Darwin Barney would start at shortstop against Boston and that left-handed pitcher Aaron Loup was activated from the 15-day DL to take Tulowitzki's spot on the 25-man roster. Tulowitzki, 31, missed two games this week with a sore quadriceps before returning to the lineup Friday. However, he aggravated the injury and an MRI was taken Saturday. He is batting just .204 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs in 46 games this season. - - - The New York Mets acquired veteran first baseman James Loney from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations. New York made the move after Lucas Duda went on the disabled list earlier this week with a stress fracture in his lower back and could miss two months. Loney was released by the Tampa Bay Rays in early April. - - - Outfielder Michael Brantley said there is no timetable for his return from a right shoulder injury that sidelined him for the second time this season. Brantley went on the 15-day disabled list on May 14 after he began the season on the sidelines because of surgery for a torn right labrum in November. "I wasn't bouncing back quick enough to keep playing back-to-back games, which is very important," said Brantley, who is batting .231 with seven runs batted in over 11 games this season. - - - Atlanta Braves shortstop Erick Aybar was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right foot. Aybar exited Friday's game against the Miami Marlins after getting hit by a pitch in the fourth. X-rays taken after the game were negative. The team recalled right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Saturday's game and take Aybar's spot on the active roster. Aybar is batting just .182 this year. - - - The St. Louis Cardinals activated All-Star third baseman Matt Carpenter from Major League Baseball's paternity list. Carpenter left the Cardinals on Wednesday to attend the birth of his first child with wife Mackenzie. Carpenter, 30, is batting .250 with nine home runs, 11 doubles and 32 RBIs in 46 games. To make room for Carpenter on the 25-man active roster, the Cardinals designated shortstop Ruben Tejada for assignment. - - - The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated left-handed pitcher Tony Watson from the paternity list and optioned left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein to Triple-A Indianapolis. - - - San Francisco Giants right-hander Chris Stratton was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento and will make his major league debut. Stratton took the roster spot of right-hander Matt Cain, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after being forced to leave his start Friday night with a right hamstring strain. - - - Kansas City Royals right-hander Chris Young was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list after being out with a right forearm strain. Young comes back as a reliever after beginning the season as a starter. Left-hander Brian Flynn was optioned to Triple-A Omaha to make roster room for Young. (Reporting by Andrew Both)
