Auburn names Marshall as its starting quarterback
Despite the return of Gus Malzahn to The Plains, Kiehl Frazier was unable to win the starting quarterback job at Auburn.
Instead, the signal-caller who will be running the offense for the Tigers will be Nick Marshall, who beat out Jeremy Johnson after Frazier moved to safety earlier in the week. Marshall, the junior college transfer and former Georgia cornerback, also held off Jonathan Wallace.
The 6-1, 210-pounder, who is the Georgia High School Association career recordholder for touchdown passes, threw for 3,142 yards with 18 touchdowns and ran for 1,095 yards with 19 scores last year at Garden City (KS) Community College. Former Georgia teammate Aaron Murray once said that Marshall "can throw a football farther than anyone I've ever seen in my life." Marshall also has strong run skills, making him the ideal QB for this offense.
Protecting the football is a concern for Marshall, however, after he threw 20 interceptions at Garden City last year.
Marshall and the Tigers open the season August 31 against Washington State at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
