With the 7th Pick, The San Diego Chargers Select
The San Diego Chargers finished the season with a 5-11 record and will pick seventh in the upcoming NFL Draft. Prior to late April a lot will be answered concerning the team’s location and future leadership.
The latter will obviously have an impact on who is selected when the Chargers are on the clock, but the needs are obvious. Following a season in which the team suffered multiple late game collapses some offensive improvements are needed to aid a developing defense.
San Diego could benefit from an upgrade at tackle or depth at wide receiver and quarterback. However, with a high pick the new head coach could elect to choose the best player available, a common trend among top picks. Who remains on the board when the Chargers select will also play a role in determining who shakes hands with the commissioner and dons the Chargers cap in round one.
Following is a list of a few potential picks San Diego could make when the time arrives.
Jamal Adams, S – LSU
Corey Davis, WR – Western Michigan
Malik Hooker, S – Ohio State
Cam Robinson, T – Alabama
Mitch Trubisky, QB – UNC
Deshaun Watson, QB – Clemson

Both safeties Adams and Hooker would be “best player available” selections but also fill a void left by Eric Weddle’s departure from San Diego a season ago. Others listed also fall into that category but would address immediate needs for the Bolts. Both Trubisky and Watson at quarterback developing under Philip Rivers at the NFL level would be great for the future of the franchise. A quarterback in round one however typically points to an immediate starter and who ends up making the pick as head coach will play a pivotal role here as well.
Finally, Robinson at tackle would improve the offensive line and Davis, while effective and a dangerous offensive weapon appears to be a reach for a team with other areas to address. Pre-draft workouts and combine demonstrations will also obviously help determine who the Chargers ultimately select in round one.
