Former "Miracle Met" Charles dies at 84

Ed Charles, a member of New York's 1969 Miracle Mets World Series winning team, died at age 84.

Charles died Thursday in New York.

Charles, a third baseman, was one of the leaders of a New York team that stunningly rolled through the Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series.

The Mets were 10 games out in August before recovering to win the National League East and then swept the Atlanta Braves 3-0 in the NL Championship Series. They followed by shocking the Orioles in five games in the World Series.

Age 36 at the time, Charles didn't play in another major league game following that season.

Charles played parts of three seasons with the Mets. Overall, he batted .263 with 86 homers and 421 RBIs in eight seasons, the first five-plus seasons with the Kansas City Athletics.
