The Atlanta Falcons have already seen several key players suffer significant injuries in a season that began with them as the latest team to hope they’d be the first “home” team to play in the Super Bowl and currently sees them at 2-4.

And on Tuesday, two days after picking up their second win of the season, the Falcons were handed a loss.

Devonta Freeman to be placed on injured reserve

As first reported by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, running back Devonta Freeman will be placed on injured reserve.

Atlanta coach Dan Quinn told reporters on Monday that Freeman would likely not play the coming game against the New York Giants due to a foot injury. But that isn’t the only injury Freeman is dealing with: NFL Network reported that Freeman will undergo groin surgery.

However, Freeman could come back for the final weeks of the season if his surgery and rehab go well.

Freeman hasn’t been healthy for much of season

It’s been a frustrating season for Freeman, who agreed to a six-year, $43 million extension in 2017; he missed the Falcons’ second, third, and fourth games because of a knee injury.

He’s played in two games, with two starts, with 14 carries for 68 yards and five catches for 23 yards.

The Falcons will look to Tevin Coleman and rookie Ito Smith at running back in Freeman’s absence.
