A day after Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim watched his side's Champions League quarterfinal opponent, Real Madrid, beat Mallorca 5-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Jose Mourinho made a scouting trip to Turkey of his own. Mourinho's visit to see Galatasaray play Kayserispor was a friendly occasion from the start, as he was given a large bouquet of flowers (which he quickly handed off) after getting off his private jet with his son.
At Kayserispor's Kadir Has Stadium, that friendliness gave way to pure joy when Wesley Sneijder -- who scored in just the third minute of Galatasaray's 3-1 win -- spotted Mourinho in the stands during the match. Like a child finding his parents in the crowd during a school play, Sneijder smiled and waved to Mourinho, who returned the gesture with both hands. Though Sneijder credited Mourinho with telling him to sign with Galatasaray in January, the Dutch midfielder explained after the match that he hadn't seen his former manager since they won the Champions League final together at Inter in their treble winning season of 2010.
"It's great to see him again. The last time I saw him was in the final when we played in 2010, the final against Bayern Munich. That was the last time I see him, so it was a very nice moment when he came to visit us and I am happy to see him again because we had a great time together. But I just send him a message that he should be careful because if he is around, I always score."
Though Sneijder said his hello from afar, Terim went to Mourinho's seat, where the two engaged in an intricate series of hugs and pats.
The normally prickly Mourinho killed Manchester United with kindness in the round of 16 and seems intent on doing the same to Galatasaray. If he spends both legs of the quarter finals simultaneously distracting Sneijder with two-handed waves and endlessly hugging Terim, they won't stand a chance.
