After clip by Nick Foligno, Leafs’ Dion Phaneuf responds with fisticuffs (Fight Video)

Here's an incredibly topical situation: seven minutes into the second period of Tuesday's tilt between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, Nick Foligno clipped Dion Phaneuf, getting low to duck a hit along the boards.

Phaneuf didn't like it; and while the referees assessed Foligno a two-minute minor for clipping, the Leafs captain opted to hold him accountable for it. Thus, a little over six minutes later, we got this exchange of blows (the clip is towards the end of the video).

Pretty standard fight, but there's a lot to talk about here.

First, any instance of clipping is now going to be followed by a discussion of supplemental discipline, so let's get into that: I don't expect it here. It was a pretty basic clip, but certainly not a malicious or predatory one, and with Dion Phaneuf barreling down on Foligno, I suspect claims of self-defense will carry a little more merit.

Second, is clipping on the rise or what? Prior to a couple weeks ago, it had become so rare that there were a number of people who had never even heard of it. It will be interesting to see if the penalty continues to be seen with a little more frequency, and if it does, if Sheriff Shanny will start dealing with it more harshly.

Third, you'll recall that, in Brian Burke's "shame on all of you, I had to waive Colton Orr" press conference, he expressed a concern that this was the first sign of the rat uprising. He described in detail a world in which the humans had been chased underground, and the free world had been taken over by a giant rodent named Ratigan that could only be stopped by a savvy mouse detective named Basil.

Some of that may not be true. Anyway.

For all that talk about rats taking over the game and there being no one to hold them accountable, Phaneuf sure dealt with this swiftly, no?

The Senators would go on to win the game, 3-2.

Looked like interference would be a more appropriate call, not clipping.

Dont really think anything wrong with the hit, Phaneuf didn't like it so had a fight...done. Marchand#$%$ was a little lower but not much, but goof ball Salo turned his back...saw that again yesterday, a guy goes in for a hit along the boards and turns his #$%$ into the hit...keep doing that and you'll see more and more guys ducking under these hits, and sending guys #$%$ over tea kettle....its a result of suspensions for regular hits...guys are now turning their #$%$es into the hit so they have no chance of head contact and suspension

Maybe Phaneuf held him accountable, but it cost him an instigating penalty, and a powerplay to kill off. So in dealing with "rats taking over the game" (if this was the example), there's still a major problem. Plus a minor for instigating. ;)

Bad call. Pretty cheap. Handled the way it should have been. Now it's done. Not even close to as bad as the dirty rat Marchand.

Except that Marchand's wasn't "cheap". It just happened to be against Vancouver, so by league rules he must be suspended

Marchands hti was dirty...say whatever you want...he is known for being a border line dirty player, and he just crossed the line...

Ernie, since when have the Canucks been the leagues golden child?

I agree with everyone saying this wasn't actually a clip since (like the marchand hit) the point of contact is in no way the knee or below. More importantly if we're desperately trying to get rid of hits to the head in the NHL, maybe cracking down on 'clipping' isn't the way to go, since its as far from a guys head as you can get without tying his skates together.

I agree, this wasn't a clip. But the issue with clipping is it takes the guys legs out and when he flips over and often lands upside down with his head cracking the ice really hard ... concussion.

Marchand hit in the thigh, not below the knees.. watch the replay idiot..

SUSPENSION!!!!! At least 3 games if not 5..

Look because of concussions the NHL had to get rid of hits targeting the head. So players have started going lower...let's not lose hip checks lest we end up with a no contact league.

I can't believe how ugly these 2 dudes are. Phaneuf is so chin heavy he can barely skate without falling straight forward and I'm not sure if that's Nick Foligno or that puppet Lady Elaine Fairchild from Mr Rogers, what an ugly human being.

I mean i have been hit by a good hip check on the thigh and it hurt for a few days but nothing serious but to me it kinda looks like Dion jumps a little bit right before he hits Foligno... could be just my opinion but it looked like it went from nice big legal check to a clipping penalty because of a jump

It doesn't look like a clip to me, it looks like a solid hip check. A clip is when the player gets intentionally low to go at the knees or lower of the opponent. In this clip it looked like Foligno hit him around mid to lower thigh, which isn't a clip.

Since when is a hip check when a guy ducks as another player goes to hit him? Give your head a shake, a real hip check occurs with a winger busting wide and the D man running him out of room and using his hit as a point of contact. If you were watching the game you would have seen the scrum beforehand where Foligno and Phaneuf are talking.... pre meditated and Foligno hit the deck when Phaneuf came running. Regardless it’s pretty gutless for a guy Foligno's size to pull shoot like that.

I did not see clipping there did not him very low and Phaneuf was coming down on him. Phaneuf loses again he lost the fight.

Kypreos says: "Phaneuf took matters into his own hands and settled the score". Umm ... how exactly did he do this? By getting punched out by a player 3 inches shorter? The clip was marginal too. There will be no supplemental discipline. Phaneuf actually jumped up on impact and made the hit look even lower. It was hip on hip. Suck it up Dion. You should have gotten 2 for diving. Brian Burke is calling Colton Orr as I type. Mike Brown, Dion Phaneuf just can't cut it. More truculence, testosterone and belligerence required. Some goaltending would help too!

Weak 'clipping' call. Phaneuf jumped up into it, otherwise it wouldn't even be questionable.

Nice hit. Marchand's most recent flip was a bit too low, but this one's a legit hip. Keep these hits alive.

I don't think this is worthy of a suspension, but I didnt expect Marchand to get 5 games either for his actions. Again it shouldn't be a suspension, but then I don't like it that the league does nothing if they have just gone out and be example shown they believe this type of hit is not approved off, they can't let someone throw it, right when the suspension for a similar (not the same) play is fresh in peoples minds. The league needs to stay consistent which is hard to do, but if you tell people you don't like the lowing clipping hits, you can't stand pat when someone else does one.

Loved the shot of Phaneuf getting jerseyed by Foligno. Phaneuf couldn't even get Foligno's bucket off. $6.5 M and he doesn't even know when to pinch. You might tolerate that if he could at least fight and didn't look so much like Ed Grimley.

The hit was not "on or below the knees". It was mid-thigh and not a penalty. It was simply an example of the recent wave of clipping penalties and near-penalties influencing a referee's call.
    • John  •  4 months ago
The hit was NOT at or below the knee. No penalty should have been called at all.
