Mark Snyder has been fired as Texas A&M defensive coordinator, head coach Kevin Sumlin announced on Friday.

The move comes a day after the Aggies ended their regular season with a 23-17 loss to LSU to end Snyder’s third regular season as defensive coordinator. The loss, in which LSU ran for 384 yards, dropped the team’s regular season record to 7-5 after starting the year 5-0.

Sumlin announced that linebackers coach Mark Hagan will serve as the team’s interim coordinator in a bowl game.

“Mark is an outstanding coach and an even better person, but he understands the production needed to be better on the defensive side of the football,” Sumlin said in a statement. “We wish he and his family all of the best moving forward.”

Entering Week 14, the Aggies’ defense was ranked No. 77 nationally, allowing 27.7 points per game. Snyder’s defense allowed 445.2 yards per game, ranking last in the SEC.

“I appreciate the opportunity Kevin Sumlin gave me to come to Texas A&M and to work on his staff,” Snyder said in a statement. “I have been in the business for a while now and understand it is a production-based business.”

Before his time in College Station, Snyder was the head coach at Marshall from 2005-09 and had stints as an assistant at South Florida, Ohio State, Minnesota, Youngstown State and UCF.

For Sumlin, Will Muschamp seems like a top target to coach the Aggies’ defense.
