A suspect has been arrested in the shooting of BYU signee Charles West.

According to the Deseret News, 18-year-old Montay Kentral Howard was arrested in Coppell, Texas, after West was shot in the arm Sunday evening.

The Coppell department said Howard had a gun and fired multiple shots at West, one of which struck West in the left arm. West reportedly told police that he and Howard had an argument about money earlier in the day on Sunday. Police charged Howard with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, and is still being held in custody.

The incident reportedly occurred while West was outside of a middle school playing basketball with friends.

“It was broad daylight,” West’s attorney, Hunt Bonneau, told the Dallas Morning News. “It wasn’t like he was doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing. It’s just kind of a really scary event that he’d been very lucky to get through.”

West, a three-star running back, was treated for his gunshot wound and released from Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on Monday.

Though West signed with BYU, his status with the program is up in the air due to his own legal issues. West was arrested in February for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana for an alleged January incident.
