North Carolina agrees to seven-year deal with coach Larry Fedora

North Carolina and coach Larry Fedora have agreed to a seven-year deal to keep Fedora in Chapel Hill, the school confirmed in a release.

Fedora, 53, is 32-18 in four seasons with the Tar Heels and has his team playing for the ACC title Saturday evening against No. 1 Clemson. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 10 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Fedora was the talk of the coaching vacancy at South Carolina, but refused to entertain those rumors with his team preparing for the ACC title game.

Fedora initially agreed to a seven-year deal with UNC in 2011 when he took the job. That deal called for Fedora to earn $1.73 million before performance bonuses. The terms of the new deal have not yet been disclosed.

The Tar Heels have qualified for a bowl game every season during Fedora’s tenure. Saturday will mark North Carolina’s first-ever appearance in the ACC title game. Fedora said this week that if his team upsets the No. 1 Tigers, it deserves a spot in the top four.

"I most definitely do," Fedora said when asked if his team should be in with a win. "If we beat the No. 1 team in the nation, then I believe this team deserves to be in the College Football Playoff."
