Michigan State commit Malik McDowell has not sent a letter of intent, will take visits

Five days after national signing day, the Malik McDowell recruiting saga has yet to reach a conclusion.

McDowell, a Rivals five-star defensive end from Southfield, Michigan, announced his commitment to Michigan State last Wednesday but did not send a letter of intent to the Spartans staff. Michigan State has been McDowell’s favorite, but his mother, Joya Crowe, is not on board with the decision.

Crowe said prior to signing day that she did not want her son to choose Michigan State and when he went ahead and announced his decision to be a Spartan anyway, she did sign the National Letter of Intent.

As of Monday, McDowell’s father, Greg, told Rivals that his son may take a few unofficial visits to other finalists – including Ohio State and Florida State.

“I know he is open to taking some unofficials to Florida State and Ohio State,” Greg McDowell said. “We plan on doing some unofficials and see if he and his mom can resolve this. It’s possible she’ll be open to Michigan State as well, so we’ll have to see.”

Greg McDowell also said that Michigan – his son’s other finalist – remains an option as well.

“One thing I have to say about these schools is after hearing everything, they were calling – not on the recruiting aspect, but calling to see if the family was all right,” Greg McDowell said.

Though the majority of recruits sign on national signing day, prospects still have until the end of March to officially send in a letter of intent and Greg McDowell is confident that the family can come to a decision.

“We have until April 1 to decide, so hopefully within the coming weeks we will have something,” he said.

Whoever eventually lands McDowell will be getting an impressive prospect. The 6-foot-6, 292-pound McDowell is the No. 26 rated prospect in the class of 2014 according to Rivals.
