LSU pokes Texas A&M's defense in new Chavis suit filing

LSU thinks the lawsuit against it by former defensive coordinator John Chavis should be dismissed. Oh, and that Texas A&M's defense was bad in 2014.

Chavis left for A&M following the 2014 season. LSU believes he owes $400,000 in a buyout for leaving before there were 11 months remaining on his contract. Chavis said that via the month's notice he gave of his resignation, he owes nothing because there were less than 11 months remaining on his contract. LSU wants the money it thinks it's owed. Chavis is suing not to pay.

LSU filed a motion to dismiss the suit on Monday and included within the filing a diss against Texas A&M's defense. From the Advocate:

“The only fact implicating Texas (in the suit) is that Chavis happened to defect to Texas A&M and chose to begin working for A&M before his service to LSU was complete,” the new filing says. “Notwithstanding the Aggies dire need for defensive help, Chavis could have defected to a college or professional team in any state, or even in a foreign country.”

Ouch. there's no love lost here. And it's tough to quibble with LSU's remark, either. A&M's defense was bad in 2014.

According to the Advocate, amendments to each side's story have been filed as well. Chavis wants $205,000 in unpaid bonuses and vacation time from LSU while the school wants to figure out the exact timeline of Chavis' involvement with the school before his hire was officially announced.

Dr. Saturday reported Chavis was leaving LSU shortly after the Tigers' Music City Bowl loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 31. Chavis' LSU contract was up at the end of 2015 and he submitted his resignation notice to the school on Jan. 5.

Chavis had been negotiating a contract extension with LSU but didn't agree to it because he didn't want a provision in his contract that would terminate his deal if LSU coach Les Miles' contract was terminated in the duration of Chavis' contract.
