After nearly 13 years as commissioner of Conference USA, Britton Banowsky announced Thursday that he will step down from the position in order to serve as the Executive Director of the College Football Playoff Foundation.

“My time with Conference USA has been an experience of a lifetime,” Banowsky said. “It has been an honor to serve these member institutions and this great conference, which is very well positioned for the future. The landscape has settled and these universities are all on the rise. They work very well together and the conference has tremendous leadership on each campus and within the conference office.”

Banowsky took over as commissioner in Oct. 2002, replacing Mike Slive, who moved on to the SEC.

The conference announced that Banowsky will stay on as commissioner until his successor is named.

In his new role with the College Football Playoff, Banowsky will lead the CFP’s philanthropic initiative, known as the Foundation.

“We are delighted that Britton will be leading the CFP Foundation,” said CFP executive director Bill Hancock. “He has a great passion for community service and for the mission of our Foundation–public education.  Throughout his distinguished career, he has been known for his great intellect, heart and creativity.  He is the very best person to take this Foundation to an exciting new echelon.”

According to the CFP, Banowsky’s role is to “enhance the Foundation and build sustainability for years to come.”

“I am thrilled to be able to devote my attention on building the CFP Foundation and supporting the great cause of improving public education and the lives of teachers, our greatest asset,” said Banowsky. “Along with our many partners, we have a great opportunity to use the sport of college football to make a profound social impact, and my hope is we take full advantage of it.”
