Atypical playing surfaces are now all the rage in the MAC, apparently.

Eastern Michigan announced it would install a new gray playing surface at its stadium for the 2014. On Tuesday, another team from the wild and wacky world of the MAC announced plans for new turf as well.

Apparently due to a harsher winter in frigid New York state than usual, the University of Buffalo will have to install a new playing surface at UB Stadium. The school released the visuals for the new field and it looks pretty sharp.

Buffalo is one of the state universities of New York (SUNY) and the school is certainly making that clear with the new design. I really dig the outline of the state border in the background of the midfield logo along with the blue end zones.

According to a release from the school, the surface will made of “A-Turf Titan,” which is the same synthetic playing surface used at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.

“We are always working to provide the best for our student-athletes,” said athletic director Danny White. “Not only will our teams be playing on one of the industry’s top synthetic surfaces, but the bold design will serve as a reminder of UB’s status as the largest and most comprehensive public research institution in the State of New York.”

Construction to the field is set to begin this month and will be ready to go by the time the Bulls’ season opens up at home against Duquesne on August 30. UB is coming off an 8-5 record, which included the second bowl game berth in school history.
