Fred Hoiberg sinks hole in one and double eagle within two months of each other
Iowa State fans should quit worrying that coach Fred Hoiberg might leave Ames to take an NBA job someday.
The PGA tour might come calling first.
Two months after recording a double eagle on a 555-yard par-5 at Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course in Mexico, Hoiberg showcased his golfing prowess again Monday at a Coaches vs. Cancer event at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines. He aced the 135-yard 17th hole with a pitching wedge for his first-ever hole in one.
"It was exciting because I was hitting the ball pretty pathetically to be honest with you," Hoiberg told WHO-TV in Des Moines. "I'd love to tell you that I pured a pitching wedge that had a little backspin on it into the hole, but I bladed it a little bit, it had a little sidespin on it, it hit the flag and dropped. I was floored."
The odds of sinking a double eagle and a hole and one within two months of one-another have to be astronomically high, but perhaps it should be no surprise that Hoiberg was the one to achieve it. After all, the man known as "The Mayor" has led a charmed life, winning a state championship and being named Iowa's Mr. Basketball as a senior at Ames High School in 1991, earning All-American honors at Iowa State and returning to his hometown to coach the Cyclones after a 10-year NBA career.
Of course before anyone promotes Hoiberg from Mayor to King, they should probably check out the two tweets Iowa State assistant coach Doc Sadler sent Wednesday evening.
Wrote Sadler, "Coach may make hole in ones and double eagles but he lost to his son Jack tonight. [Who's] the mayor??" Then in the next tweet, there's a picture of a smiling Jack in a golf shirt and hat next to his father making the thumbs down sign.
Nobody wins them all. Not even The Mayor.
