Louisiana prep running back rewrites state powerlifting record in impressive fashion

It's a wonder any linebacker ever tackled Covington (La.) High running back Josh Bickham.

The 5-foot-6, 198-pound junior shattered every major Louisiana powerlifting record in his weight class at the state meet this past weekend. Of course, he already owned all the records after a record-setting performance in the bench, squat and deadlift last year. In other words, he's not to be messed with.

Bickham benched 420 pounds, squatted 660 pounds and deadlifted 725 pounds for a total of 1,805 pounds -- all state records, according to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. To put that in perspective, the front seven on LSU football's depth chart an hour west on Rte. 12 weighs a combined 1,782 pounds.

“It’s amazing, but it’s weird at the same time,” he told the paper. “When I get up there to the weights, I just block everything out. … My coaches are unbelievable. They make sure I do everything right and make sure I don’t have anything else to worry about but lifting my weights. They motivate me.”

On the gridiron, Bickham averaged 7.6 yards per carry during Covington's run to the 2013 Class 5A state semifinals. He'll only be stronger as a senior, and that can't be welcome news for would-be tacklers.
