Shock and awe: Spieth and Reed blitz Poulter and Gallacher for first U.S. point

The Americans are on the board at the Ryder Cup. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed put up the first U.S. points on Friday morning, racing past Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher by a 5-and-4 count.

Spieth and Reed were a surprise team when Tom Watson appointed them the third slot in the morning fourball session with many considering the duo an early roll of the dice. However, the Americans set the tone early and never looked back.

The 21-year-old Spieth surprisingly won the opening hole with a par, an indication the European stalwart Poulter may not be at his best. After halving the next four holes, the Americans caught fire, making birdies to capture five of the next six holes.

WIth the outcome all but assured, Stephen Gallacher won the 12th hole for Europe's only win of the match. Two halved holes later, the Americans had their first point.

Tom Watson may have found a duo he can rely on in the fourball format, but they're not done today. Expect this team to remain together in the afternoon foursomes session.
