Zane Gonzalez sets FBS record, Josh Rosen gets hurt in Arizona State win over UCLA

Arizona State kicker Zane Gonzalez broke an FBS record Saturday night and helped the Sun Devils beat UCLA in the process.

Gonzalez hit three field goals on the night, and his third set an FBS record for field goals in a career — 89. Not only did the 46-yarder set the FBS record, it ended up being the deciding score in ASU’s 23-20 win over the Bruins.

The game was a defensive struggle early, but Gonzalez’s field goals (he’s now 16-of-17 on the season and 89-for-108 in his career) from 35 and 23 yards helped the Sun Devils take a 6-3 lead. The offenses opened up from there, and Gonzalez’s third field goal gave ASU a 23-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.

UCLA was able to cut ASU’s lead to three on a Josh Rosen touchdown pass to tight end Nate Iese a few minutes later, but the Sun Devils defense would hold the lead the rest of the way and knock Rosen from the game in the process.

Rosen, UCLA’s star sophomore, briefly left the game late in the first half and was again knocked out from the ballgame on a hard hit in the fourth. Rosen, who threw for 400 yards in the game, led UCLA into ASU territory, but was injured on a hard fall on his throwing shoulder.

He tested it out on the sideline, but could not re-enter the game.

After a punt, UCLA’s offense had one more shot, but backup Mike Fafual took two sacks and was intercepted in the final seconds, sealing the win for Arizona State.

The Sun Devils improved to 5-1 with the win while UCLA dropped to 3-3. The Sun Devils are 2-1 in conference play and are right in the thick of things in the South division. UCLA, a perceived favorite in the South, drops to 1-2 in league play with another disappointing start.
