Yellowjackets report: UWS women's hockey wins season opener

Oct. 27—SUPERIOR — A third-period goal by junior forward Brynn MacLean stood as the game-winner for the Wisconsin-Superior women's hockey team in a 2-1 season-opening victory over Lawrence University on Friday, Oct. 27 at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets were forced to play from behind after the Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period.

Junior defenseman Cora Coz provided the equalizer for UWS in the second period with assists from Emma Booth and Anna Scherling. The 1-1 score stood into the final intermission.

An unassisted goal by MacLean lifted the Yellowjackets to their first lead of the game at 2-1, which stood as the final score.

UWS (1-0) returns to its home ice at Wessman Arena on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the final game of its weekend series against Lawrence.

A back and forth tilt saw UWS battle to the bitter end of Friday's match against Minnesota Morris. The Cougars ultimately escaped with a four-set victory (25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25) over the Yellowjackets inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Junior Maiana Stark ended the match with a double-double complete with a match-high 15 kills and 23 digs. Kaylin Plautz and Ayla Oltmanns each added 12 kills for the Yellowjackets, which collectively finished with a .140 hitting percentage.

Colleen Claude also recorded a double-double after pouring in a team-high 30 set assists to go along with 13 digs. Jenna Anderson led all Yellowjackets in digs with 35 for the match.

UWS (15-10, 7-4 UMAC) returns to its home court on Saturday, Oct. 28 to take on Crown College at 1 p.m.
