Yellowjackets report: Holmes, Rasmussen lead UWS past Pointers

Dec. 2—SUPERIOR — Gavin Rasmussen and Blake Holmes combined on Wisconsin-Superior's first and last goals as the Yellowjackets downed Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday night, Dec. 2 at Wessman Arena.

Holmes, a senior defenseman, opened the scoring 5:44 in with Rasmussen getting the assist. Rasmussen, a junior forward from Cloquet, made it 3-0 Yellowjackets at the 11:15 mark of the second period. Justin Dauphinais had the other UWS goal, coming late in the first period.

On the defensive end, the Yellowjackets had the game under control until Conor Witherspoon of UWSP spoiled the shutout with 9:11 to play, but UWS goaltender Jan Skorpik made 26 saves.

UWS (6-6-0, 4-2-0 WIAC) will play its last game before Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 9 vs. Northland at Wessman Arena.

Wisconsin-Superior held a 36-31 lead at halftime but scored only 17 points after the break on 23 percent shooting, leading to a 58-53 nonconference loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

UWS was 16-for-31 (52 percent) from the field in the first half but fell behind after a 12-2 run from the Pointers over a five-minute stretch of the second half. UWSP, playing ahead 53-42 with 10:51 to play, allowed UWS to close within five, 55-50 with 4:20 left, but UWS made only one of its last six field-goal attempts, leading to its first loss of the season.

Josef Fahrenholtz had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Yellowjackets, while J'Vaun Walker aded 10 points and seven boards.

UWSP got 14 points off the bench from Ryan Genrich.

The Yellowjackets (5-1) host Buena Vista on Tuesday night in Superior.
