Yankees acquire Encarnacion from Mariners

The New York Yankees acquired designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and cash considerations from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Juan Then on Saturday.

Multiple outlets reported the Mariners and Yankees will split the remainder of Encarnacion's contract. Then, 19, was previously traded from the Mariners to the Yankees in November of 2017.

The 36-year-old Encarnacion, who has missed Seattle's last three games due to soreness in his back, is leading the American League in home runs with 21 this season, his first with the Mariners.

He was dealt to Seattle by the Cleveland Indians in December for Carlos Santana and cash as part of a three-team trade that sent Jake Bauers from the Tampa Bay Rays to Cleveland.

Encarnacion spent the previous two seasons with the Indians, totaling 70 total home runs with 107 RBIs each year. In his 15th season, he has hit 401 home runs during a career that also included stints with the Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Mariners will eat $30 million of Encarnacion's contract in the deal, according to USA Today. After signing a three-year, $60 million deal, Encarnacion is under contract through 2020.

Then went 0-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts in the Gulf Coast League in 2018. He will report to Short-A Everett.
