Wynford boys and girls win sectional bowling titles, onto districts

FOSTORIA - It was a clean sweep for Wynford bowlers last weekend at sectionals as the boys and girls won postseason titles in the opening weekend.

Alongside the Royals advancing to districts will be rival Bucyrus boys and girls, both as a team. Colonel Crawford's Luke Shields and Aydian Russell are moving on as individuals, while Galion's Kylee Crager and Tayla Dillard move on as individuals for the girls.

Boys sectional recap

Wynford was sitting third after regulation with Bucyrus and Liberty-Benton the top two teams separated by a mere four pints; Royals were 25 back of Bucyrus.

But a stellar showing in the baker games featuring three games of 199 out of the six gave the Royals an additional 1,083 pins to Bucyrus' 1,000 and Liberty-Benton's 949 which pushed Wynford into first ahead of its rival.

The Royals went on to nab a sectional title by 58 pins, Bucyrus was runner-up beating L-B by 55 pins. Kenton was the fourth and final team qualifier for districts.

Bucyrus' Cody Pennington (610) was individual runner-up with teammate Tyson McDaniel (590) right behind and Wynford's Blake Cooper (579) in fourth to give the area three of the top-five. Colonel Crawford's Luke Shields (528) and Aydian Russell (523) nabbed at-large bids bowling some of the highest scores by someone not on a qualifying team.

Girls sectional recap

Wynford held a 23-pin lead over Bucyrus, and 98 better than Liberty-Benton after regulation. The Eagles staved a furious comeback in the baker games including a 180 in the final game, but the Royals were able to hold on by just three pins for the sectional crown.

Bucyrus was third, Fostoria fourth as the automatic team qualifiers. Galion's Kylee Crager was sectional medalist with a 581 and teammate Tayla Dillard was runner-up at 523. Wynford was led by Samantha Dornbirer's 496, Bucyrus paced by Chloe Thompson's 488.
