Mike Dessino Invitational
Bridgewater-Raritan captured the Mike Dessino Invitational with two champions and eight other placewinners to compile 225.5 points in the 13-team tournament. The event honors the former Middlesex High School and Bloomsburg star who died in 2020.
Middletown North placed second with 213 points, followed by Rahway (173), Piscataway (126) and Montgomery (100) at host Middlesex High School.
In one of the marquee finals, Montgomery’s Jax Obe edged Piscataway’s Brian Butler Jr. at 8-6 (OT) at 144.
The Panthers crowned gold medalists in Logan Levine (132, three pins) and Matthew DiEduardo (150), who had two pins and scored a 5-4 win over Piscataway’s Sean Love in the semifinals.
BR also had finalists in Lucas Pelc (106), Brady Hnasko (120), Matthew McCann (138) and Anthony Colacino (165). Their third-place finishers were Drew Adell (113), Zach Liu (157) and Lerrod Smalls (175), while James Kilgallon (144) took fourth.
Other area champions included Piscataway’s Aiden Wallace-Rodriguez (120) and Garrett Pech (165), Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s Michael Cantwell (157) and Plainfield’s Josue Cordoba (285).
Placing second were J.F. Kennedy’s Armani Maglione (113), Edison’s Caleb Gluchowski (150) and Montgomery’s Austin Allen (190).

Watchung Hills, South Plainfield excels at Morris Knolls
Watchung Hills crowned two champions in dominant performances and placed second at the Morris Knolls Invitational and South Plainfield took fourth with a gold medalist and three runners-up.
Morris Knolls won the event and Sparta placed third.
Watchung Hills’ Jordan Bash (138) pinned or technical falled his way to the title and Cam Kolakowski (120) also pinned all his opponents.
South Plainfield’s Joe Stanzione captured the 126-pound title.
For Watchung Hills, placing second were Michael Samayoa (126), Max Shaferman (132) and Pat Coleman (175), the latter two are first-year varsity wrestlers. Joey Richardson placed third and Artun Kirgezmis (165) and Reilly Taillon (175) each took fourth.
For South Plainfield, Logan Stoeckel (106), Nolan Hook (138) and James Bermingham (165) were runners-up. The Tigers had a quartet of fourth-place finishers in Alex Pigna (113), Anthony Mateo (132), Ryan Balent (144) and Jose Rodriguez (150).
Ron Mazzola boys
Old Bridge crowned two champions and placed fourth at the Ron Mazzola Memorial on its home mats. The tournament honors the late Ron Mazzola, a beloved wrestling volunteer in various capacities throughout the state. He died in Feb. 2022.
Christian Brothers Academy won the 16-team event with 240.5 points followed by Northern Burlington (125), Raritan (112.5), Old Bridge (109) and Sayreville (107) in the top 5.
Old Bridge’s returning state champion Logan Roman captured the 120-pound title with a pin, a technical fall and a major decision.
Teammate Dom Paulino won at 215 as the seventh seed. He scored two pin and two decisions.
Old Bridge’s Jake Tenebruso (157) and Sayreville’s Connor Walsh (285) each placed second.

Jenna Magrino (120) and Adriana Farese (126) won decisions in the final. Emma Sagi, who placed fifth in the state last season, won at 132 with pins of 1:20, 1:03 and 1:07.
The Knights’ Sofia Sousa (165) placed third and taking fourth were Sam Larkin (100), Nuria Kojic (114) and Emily Valerio (165).
North Brunswick placed fifth and had two runners-up in Melani Contreras (138) and Gabrielle Roberts (145) and third-place finisher Rahkai Degrasse (235). Amillyani Gonzalez (138) finished fourth.

Ricky I Memorial Tournament
Governor Livingston, expected to be one of Group 2’s best teams, started hot by winning the tournament as Cristian Gioia (165) and Nathan Faxon (215) won titles.
The Highlanders showed their depth by compiling 212 team points ahead of Ridge (191) and North Hunterdon (175). GL’s runners-up were Joseph Dasti (150), Jake Kreisberg (157), while Henrique Ribeiro (126) placed third.
Ridge crowned three champions in Gavin Duran (132), Ryan Engle (150) and Liam Thoma (157).
St. Thomas Aquinas’ Beniamino DiCocco (113), Reed Kerstetter (138) and Liam Zeh (144) each won titles.
Other area champions included North Hunterdon’s Reid Buzby (106) and Aiden Yarussi (120), Bound Brook’s Ethan Delacruz (126), Colonia’s Michael Feliciano (175) and Somerville’s Sean O`Neill (190).

Caldwell Tournament
Hunterdon Central is off to a strong start. Friday, the Red Devils beat Warren Hills. Saturday, they captured the Caldwell Tournament with four champions.
Anthony Rossi (120), Evan Thompson (138), Rhett Washleski (150) and Thomas Brunetti (190) each earned a gold medal as the Red Devils got 223.5 team points. Caldwell was second with 210.5 points. Will Cella (144) placed second.
