Wolves vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Chelsea fell to a fourth consecutive defeat away from home as Wolves held on for a 2-1 win on Christmas Eve. The biggest chance of a goalless first-half fell to Raheem Sterling, who robbed Joao Gomes and ran clean through on goal. He had Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson completely free to his right, but went for goal himself and was denied by Jose Sa.

Almost inevitably after those missed chances, it was Wolves who took the lead five minutes after the break. With their eighth corner of the match, the hosts opened the scoring as Mario Lemina flicked a header into the far corner. The board went up to show 11 minutes of added-time, but Chelsea's hopes of a late charge were immediately dented by a second Wolves goal. Benoit Badiashile made a mess of a low ball into the middle, succeeding only in laying it off for Matt Doherty to finish calmy.

Christopher Nkunku scored his first Premier League goal as the visitors responded, heading home well from Sterling's ball into the middle, and that left Chelsea with six minutes or so to level it up. But an equaliser did not come for Chelsea, as they fell to a 19th Premier League defeat of 2023. That is, remarkably, more than any other side, with the latest poor result leaving the Blues tenth in the table at Christmas.

Discipline has been a familiar problem for Chelsea and so too their finishing in front of goal. The Blues have now failed to convert 36 big chances in the Premier League this season, more than any other side.

There were ironic cheers from the Wolves supporters as Jackson was substituted, despite the visitors needing a goal.  He was one of the players guilty of wasting huge chances, mis-controlling the ball on multiple occasions when played in on goal.

His strike partner Armando Broja wasted the first two opportunities of the game with a ponderously slow cut inside early on, ultimately allowing an exposed Wolves to get back into shape. The second chance was an air shot after Gusto's pass.

Sterling, however, missed the best chance when three-on-one with Jose Sa, after Joao Gomes gave the ball away as the last defender back.

14:48 , Matt Verri

90 mins: It's not three days... but it is 11 minutes!

Still plenty of time for Chelsea, if they can find some quality from somewhere.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:47 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Palmer wriggles his way to the byline, ends up clattering into the boards though as he swings at thin air and loses his balance.

Chelsea need this board for stoppage-time to say three days.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:43 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Sterling drifts out to the left, swings a deep cross into the box and there's nobody there in a Chelsea shirt.

Pochettino not exactly looking thrilled with life on the touchline, to put it mildly.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:41 , Matt Verri

82 mins: There's going to be a fair amount of added time, potentially seven or eight minutes.

Chelsea still not able to sustain pressure on Wolves though - it's Madueke and Sterling playing through the middle now.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:38 , Matt Verri

Badiashile, Maatsen and Madueke on. Gusto, Jackson and Colwill making way.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:33 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Doyle on for Wolves, replacing Sarabia.

Gallagher meanwhile is edging very close to a red card. Already on a yellow, he slides in and halts a Wolves counter. Free-kick.

Gusto then loses the ball, Chelsea so sloppy. Cunha fires into the side-netting.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:30 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Wolves camped deep in their own half - got to be near enough 25 minutes still to go with added-time.

Chelsea will get chances, the way this match has gone. Problem is you're not particularly confident they'll take them.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:28 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Concern for Wolves - Dawson is going to have to come off.

He's injured himself making that block and the stretcher is on. Not sure it's going to be used, he's limped off instead.

Bueno on for the hosts.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

14:26 , Matt Verri

Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer have been booked for dissent and Malo Gusto booked for kicking a ball away.

Chelsea love a yellow card. No team have earned more in the Premier League this season, with Jackson the most booked.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:23 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Chelsea going to incredible lengths to avoid scoring here.

Wolves carved open, Palmer slides it through to Sterling. Low strike may well have beaten Sa, but Dawson flies in to block.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Off the line!

Nice move from Chelsea, as Mudryk slides in Palmer.

His cut back is deflected straight up, Sa comes but gets nowhere near. Falls for Nkunku, pokes an effort at goal. Toti clears it away on the line.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:20 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Palmer into the book for dissent, so he's suspended for Chelsea's next game.

Jackson swiftly follows him for some complaints of his own. Chelsea unravelling.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:19 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Gusto pokes the ball away after conceding a throw-in - yellow card. So pointless.

At the other end, Sterling down in the box under pressure from Toto. Whistle goes... referee gives it the other way!

Not sure about that. VAR check complete, on we go.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:16 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Ugochukwu has gone down - yet more injury problems for Chelsea.

The visitors will make a double change. Nkunku coming on for his Premier League debut, with Mudryk also introduced.

Broja and Ugochukwu off.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

14:15 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino must be thinking this is so Chelsea.

Dominate the first half, waste chances, concede from a corner. Rinse and repeat.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:13 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Dear me. What is going on?!

Semedo and Kilman decide to just run into each other, ignoring the ball.

That leaves Jackson to go clean through, but he shows no desire to shoot with his left foot and instead just stumbles towards goal until he loses the ball.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:12 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Sarabia floats it to the back post, Petrovic threatens to come for it but changes his mind.

Chelsea need to get a grip, or this will get away from them very quickly.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

14:11 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Chelsea all over the place now.

They lose the ball under no pressure, Wolves break on them. Hwang wants a penalty, as Colwill gets very physical with him.

Hosts have to settle for yet another corner.

GOAL! Wolves 1-0 Chelsea | Mario Lemina 51'

14:09 , Matt Verri

Eighth Wolves corner coming up.

AND THIS ONE BRINGS THE OPENING GOAL!

Chelsea haven't defended them well at all. Lemina barely has to move in the box, just flicks a header into the far corner.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

14:06 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Petrovic with a big, big save.

Gomes with a lovely ball to the back post, Toti completely free. Powers a header at goal, Petrovic parries it away.

Toti HAD to score from there.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

14:05 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Wolves inches away from taking the lead!

Silva with a disaster at the back, just falls over and Wolves win it back.

Gomes' shot takes a deflection, bounces just wide of the far post. Petrovic didn't move.

Back underway!

14:03 , Matt Verri

Second-half is up and running at Molineux.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Two minutes added on. Ait-Nouri was on the floor for about three earlier in the half, so best of luck guessing how they've work that out.

Palmer swings a free-kick into the box, straight at Sa... who drops it! Thankfully for him he swiftly reclaims.

Wolves then lost it again, Palmer tries his luck. Shot deflected over.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Wolves should probably be in front!

Simple ball over the top and Chelsea are caught out. Hwang clean through, Petrovic opts not to come off his line and the Wolves striker slices a shot over the bar.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Feels like both sides are going to play their way into trouble at the back at any moment.

Neither looking hugely confident at the back when playing out - both still persisting.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Lemina's shot is blocked, falls for Hwang in the six-yard box.

Flag stays down, but he can't turn in time to get a shot away. Wins a corner - flag doesn't go up. He was onside.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:38 , Matt Verri

Raheem Sterling produces one of the worst misses of the season.

He is not only one-on-one with Sa but also has two players to pass to, if needed. All of Sterling, Jackson and Palmer were bearing down on Sa but he somehow denied them.

Furious scenes from the Wolves players after, who were shouting at each other for giving away such a chance.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Chelsea firmly on top again now, after a decent spell for Wolves.

The Blues could easily have scored a couple of goals already, but the final bit of quality in the box has been missing. Again.

Huge moment for Chelsea

13:35 , Matt Verri

Sterling surely should have just squared it...

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Decent effort from Sarabia, it was heading for the top corner before it flicked off the wall. Corner.

Chelsea break, Gomes robbed and it's three-on... none!

Sterling clean through, two players to his right. Goes for goal himself, Sa saves. MASSIVE chance.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Gallagher now shown a yellow card, clipping Ait-Nouri as the full-back went to drive into the box.

"I didn't touch him," says the Chelsea captain.

He did.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:30 , Matt Verri

Conor Gallagher just berated his teammates for not moving enough to create attacking opportunities.

You feel his stature is growing while wearing the captain's armband.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Sterling standing over this. Is it too close?

Yep, Sterling lifting his effort well over the bar. Tried to get power and still go over the wall - never going to happen from there.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Terrible challenge from Lemina, hacks Sterling down about six inches outside the area.

Referee initially plays advantage, but blows for the free-kick. Yellow card.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:28 , Matt Verri

You worry that Chelsea may have wasted an important period of early domination in this half.

Nicolas Jackson mis-controlling when he might have had a chance to shoot the latest opportunity to pass.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Rare Wolves attack, as Cunha slides a ball through to Ait-Nouri.

His cut-back picks out Sarabia, who can't control it... offside flag up anyway.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:23 , Matt Verri

It's a very creative shape from Chelsea today.

Malo Gusto is effectively the wide right player, with Palmer more central and two strikers.

It's working well.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Brilliant from Sterling, dreadful from Jackson.

We'll start with the good, as Sterling turns into space and clips a lovely ball to the back post.

He makes his frustration very clear though as Jackson then fails to either take a shot or bring the ball under his control.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Sterling down now, his actually coming after contact though.

Semedo booted the ball away, caught Sterling in the process. VAR taking a quick look, but thankfully for O'Neil's blood pressure the check is swiftly over.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:17 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Ait-Nouri back up, looks completely fine and smiles as O'Neil whispers something to him.

Wouldn't rule out that being a ploy by Wolves to give O'Neil a chance to pass on a message...

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Trouble here for Wolves.

Dawson pings a pass straight out of play, and Ait-Nouri then just sits down. Looks to be a problem with his ankle.

O'Neil calls his players over for a team talk.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:13 , Matt Verri

Chelsea supporters are waving their blue Christmas hats in the away end.

It was brilliant of Chelsea to put on buses, where the fans were presumably given the hats, to get them here.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: The Blues continue to threaten, Sterling a real threat.

He plays in Gusto down the right, as the full-back bursts into the box. Cut back finds Broja, but the striker basically swings at thin air.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Sterling slides a pass through the Wolves defence, Jackson very nearly gets on the end of it but Semedo gets back to cover.

Been a pretty confident start this from Chelsea.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

13:06 , Matt Verri

Chelsea are very quick in transition. Mauricio Pochettino has done his homework, exploiting Wolves' main weakness.

Of course, Raheem Sterling is the outlet as ever, just hanging on the halfway line to spring these attacks.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Chance for Wolves to break, they briefly have a five-on-three.

Gomes on the edge of the box, goes for a clever reverse pass but Gallagher gets back to intercept.

Chelsea straight on the attack themselves, Sterling leading the charge. Comes to Broja, takes too long to get a shot away and the chance goes.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

13:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Not exactly a lightning fast start to the match.

Barely got above walking pace so far, both sides being allowed plenty of time on the ball.

Sterling breaks the walking rule as he bursts into space, goes down expecting to get a free-kick but he's waved up.

Nizaar Kinsella at Molineux

Chelsea look like they're playing a 4-4-2 from kick-off.

Petrovic gets chance to impress again

12:38 , Matt Verri

Djordje Petrovic was the shootout hero in midweek as he fired the starting pistol on the race to be Chelsea No1.

The 24-year-old Serb made a brilliant save from Matt Ritchie's penalty – Newcastle’s fourth - to send the Blues into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Petrovic used all of his 6ft 6in frame to claw away Ritchie’s strike and spark wild celebrations at Stamford Bridge after the match had finished 1-1.

Following his moment in the spotlight, the Chelsea squad mobbed the £14million signing from New England Revolution.

Robert Sanchez, currently injured, watched on knowing he has a real fight on his hands.

Sanchez has made mistakes since joining from Brighton in the summer, particularly in his distribution and when claiming crosses, and could lose his place in the long-term.

Sterling: Chelsea need to win trophies

12:21 , Matt Verri

Chelsea sit tenth in the Premier League table, and will remain there even if they do pick up a win here.

The Blues are though through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, after beating Newcastle in midweek, and Raheem Sterling is confident progress is being made.

"This is a football club that needs to be challenging at the top of the table and winning trophies as well," he told Sky Sports.

"We're making little steps in the right direction - long may it continue."

Chelsea will be fairly relieved to see he is still absent.

Moises Caicedo isn't available today, with Enzo Fernandez also out. It means Lesley Ugochukwu is drafted straight back into the starting line up after a brief spell out injured.

Romeo Lavia makes a Chelsea matchday squad for the first time and could make his debut at Molineux. Christopher Nkunku is also on the bench.

Nicolas Jackson is lining up alongside Armando Broja. The pair played 60 minutes together against Newcastle, with Jackson often playing off the left wing. That could allow Chelsea to play their usual 4-2-3-1 formation at Wolves.

Neto to provide Wolves with major boost?

11:43 , Matt Verri

Pedro Neto is back in training as Wolves prepare to host Chelsea.

The 23-year-old suffered a hamstring during his team’s draw at home to Newcastle in October but Wolves have confirmed he is in contention to return.

Speaking ahead of his side’s loss to West Ham last weekend, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil said: “We’re really hopeful he’ll be in the squad for the Chelsea game, all being well.

“If he isn’t in the matchday squad for Chelsea, it doesn’t mean there’s been a setback, it just means he hasn’t been able to tick off all the things.

“He’s really close, but with the nature of the injury, being close is still not enough. We need to make sure that he’s right, but if everything goes perfectly between now and then, I am hopeful that he will be seen before Christmas."

Strasbourg eye move for Barco

11:33 , Matt Verri

RC Strasbourg have a significant £22million January transfer budget to sign players, including Chelsea target Valentin Barco.

The 19-year-old could leave Boca Juniors this winter and is being targeted by the French club, offering him a future pathway into Mauricio Pochettino's first team at Stamford Bridge.

Strasbourg are the first club to join Chelsea in Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's multi-club model as part of BlueCo.

They have been given a significant transfer budget and have a remit to sign Under-23 players like Barco, who Manchester City and Brighton also target for their own multi-club operations.

Pochettino sends warning to Lavia

11:21 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino says Romeo Lavia could make his Chelsea debut against Wolves but warned his returning injured players that they will be phased in very slowly.

The Argentine was keen to send a message directly to his Blues squad that he will only pick players who are fully fit and in good form.

Lavia, 19, has not played a competitive match for almost seven months now and has yet to make his Chelsea debut since a £53million summer transfer from Southampton.

“Lavia is in a similar position to [Christopher] Nkunku," he said. "He arrived and never made his debut. After six months, maybe tomorrow he will be involved, maybe.

"He is with the team and doing well but he still needs time to get his best form.

"They are all desperate to make debuts and we are pushing, but I need to be clear that we cannot make the mistake, they can be involved, but in which form, at what level?

"It is easy to say I want to play but we are competing, and it is serious the competition but, after six months, Nkunku and him need to know they need to train really hard every day, or double the players who are fit, to make an impact when they go to the pitch."

James looks to put hamstring misery behind him

11:04 , Matt Verri

Reece James has had hamstring surgery in Finland, ruling the Chelsea captain out for around four months.

The decision for James to undergo surgery was made following further specialist assessments on Wednesday.

James has suffered repeated injury hamstring problems and surgery leaves his Euro 2024 hopes in major doubt.

But James will hope surgery will give him a better chance of making a full recovery and reduce long-term hamstring issues.

James has suffered seven hamstring injuries in the last three years.

Standard Sport prediction

It’s hard to imagine Chelsea suddenly stringing a consistent run together, particularly on the road.

Wolves have impressed at home this season, beating Manchester City and Tottenham already, and will back themselves to pick up another positive result.

1-1 draw.

Chelsea team news

Enzo Fernandez is expected to be miss the trip to Wolves after being pictured in tears following Chelsea's win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.

The 22-year-old midfielder was substituted in the 32nd minute and stayed in the dressing room for most of the match,.

Mauricio Pochettino revealed post-game that the midfielder had been suffering from illness and asked to be substituted, amid rumours come out of Argentina that he is suffering from a more serious groin injury.

In better news, midfield duo Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu along with winger Noni Madueke are back in full training.

Lavia is in contention to make his debut at Molineux after Christopher Nkunku made his debut from the bench, playing for just over 20 minutes on Tuesday.
