Windthorst's Vieth drops to 50th in World Series of Poker main event

LAS VEGAS — After spending most of the day among the top 10, a late loss dropped Mason Vieth to 50th after four days in the World Series of Poker main event.

Vieth, a Windthorst native, had a net loss of 990,000 chips on Day 4 of the renowned Texas Hold ‘Em tournament, giving him 2,560,000 when play resumes at 2 p.m. local time Tuesday at the famed Horseshoe Hotel.

Ryan Tosoc, of Chicago, is the current chip leader with 5,120,000, holding a narrow lead over Mitchell Halverson (5,100,000), of West Linn, Ore., and India’s Aditya Systla (5,075,000).

Regardless of his standing, Vieth is one of 441 players remaining in the tournament that set a record for entries with 10,043. That number, combined with the traditional $10,000 buy-in, created the largest pool in tournament history at $93,399,900. First place wins $12,100,000.

Vieth is guaranteed to return to Windthorst with at least $37,500 but is in position to win significantly more than that.

Vieth’s highest reported chip count Tuesday was 3,550,000 after he eliminated two players with what WSOP.com called “an unconventional hand.”

Vieth tried using his superior chip stack to bully his way to an easy pot win but ended up pulled into a much-larger hand that put two opponents all-in pre-flop.

Vieth was well behind and claimed he “would need to get lucky to win,” flipping over the 10 and six of hearts. One opponent had the ace and king of hearts, while the other displayed the king and queen of spades.

The first four cards avoided hitting any of the three hands, but the fifth was a six, giving Vieth a pair and the win.

The Windthorst native will hope to connect on a few more wins Tuesday and climb the chip standings again.
