Westlake beat Vista Ridge in a pre-Thanksgiving overtime girls basketball nondistrict contest pitting playoff favorites in a fierce game.

Westlake guard Giana Angiolet drained a 3-point shot at the buzzer in regulation to force the extra period.  Angiolet scored 23 points in a solid outing against a strong defensive squad in Vista Ridge. Chaps post Tamia King added 22 points while collecting 10 rebounds. Both the 8-2 Chaps and the 6-4 Rangers have played tough early schedules to prepare for district play and possible long playoff runs.

Around the area

Liberty Hills keeps rolling: Class 5A state volleyball finalist Liberty Hill had a present for the basketball team as the fourth-ranked Panthers beat a good Cedar Creek team 79-21 to improve to 10-0. Middle blocker Evie Bruce traded her volleyball jersey for a basketball top and led the Panthers with 19 points and 10 rebounds just days after having a good tournament for the silver medalist volleyball team.

Impressing early: Glenn and first-year coach Kenny Mann continue to turn heads after the Grizzlies traveled north to the prestigious Coppell tournament and went 4-1, beating Centennial, Keller Central, host Coppell and Plano East and falling only to Little Elm. Glenn standouts Libby Lee and Soma Okolo both were named all-tournament.

Watching the Eagles: Georgetown also is red-hot. The Eagles have won three straight games against District 25-6A opponents, defeating Westwood 52-26, Stony Point 47-23 and McNeil 42-28. Reese Hoadley is the team's leading scorer (15.5 points per game). Junior 6-foot-1 twins Cassady and Chasidy Lee have combined to average 18 rebounds. The Eagles will host the Jack Frost Invitational this weekend.

Holiday games: In other games over the holiday break, Taylor defeated Thrall 49-36 while Bastrop topped St. Stephen’s’ 47-24 and Stony Point beat Cornerstone Christian 52-37. ... Cedar Ridge has won two in a row after beating Bowie 55-36. Coach Kevin Lewis and the Raiders have been rotating lineups due to injuries and illness, but after losing four of five games, Cedar Ridge beat Weiss 69-38 before defeating Bowie. ... Hays has won four in a row as the Hawks crushed San Antonio Antonian Prep 71-34 after beating Laredo United South 54-41 and Alamo Heights 58-42.  All three Hawks losses came against powerful 6A foes: defending state champion San Antonio Clark, McKinney and San Antonio Brennan.

Noteworthy: Cedar Creek sophomore Keyaira Limuel Washington is averaging 35.3 points for the Eagles while collecting 10.8 rebounds per contest.  As a freshman, she averaged 18.5 points.  Cedar Creek is 5-4.
