Westfall cruises to ninth straight Scioto Valley Conference wrestling title

FRANKFORT − The years come and go, but the one constant is Westfall bringing home a Scioto Valley Conference title.

Success has been baked into the Mustangs program since it began its streak of winning the SVC title year-in and year-out. Coach William Breyer can attest to that. He's witnessed it firsthand. For the past nine years, the Mustangs have shown up and handled their conference opponents.

Once again, that streak of success carried over. For the ninth year in a row, the Mustangs are heading back to Williamsport with a conference title in hand. They scored 273 points and took home first place in five weight classes to clinch the SVC championship at Adena High School on Saturday.

"You always start off the year wanting to win league, and we're rolling," Breyer said. "Nine years in a row is not just me; It's a group effort to continue to produce great wrestlers that come into the room and continue to get better. It's a Westfall program thing, not really an individual thing."

Huntington took second place with 192 points and Adena placed third with 129 points. Zane Trace slid into fourth with 126 points, Paint Valley took fifth with 88 points and Unioto placed sixth with 84. Piketon took seventh place with 19 points and scoreless Southeastern rounded out the tournament in eighth place.

Westfall also earned the most individual titles of any school in the SVC with five. Brady Speakman won the 106-pound title, Bryson Campfield won the 120-pound title, Wyatt Ward won the 138-pound title, Gage Bolt won the 165-pound title and Bryce Wickline won the 175-pound title.

Speakman and Campfield both represent a freshman class that's already begun to make an impact for Westfall. Speakman won his first two matches by pin and closed the tournament out with a 14-4 major decision over Aden Breniser of Huntington. Campfield won all three of his matches by pin.

"Brady and Bryson, man, they're the next two freshmen, and Bo (Williams)," Breyer said. "That's a great freshman class coming up."

Huntington and Zane Trace each had three wrestlers win individual titles. For the Pioneers, Zane Pickerrell won the 132-pound title, Storm Davis won the 144-pound title and J.T. Jenkins won the 285-pound title.

Jimmy Sexton and Jackson McNeal won the 113-pound and 190-pound titles for Huntington, respectively. Mavrick Smith earned Huntington's third individual title of the day at 157 pounds, securing his fourth SVC championship title. What's more, he did it after dropping down a weight class.

"That doesn't come along very often," Huntington coach Mark DePugh said. "Wrestled a little sluggish today, but now that he's used to that weight we'll get things up and going here in two weeks for postseason."

Adena, Paint Valley and Unioto had one wrestler apiece win in their respective weight class. Hunter Freeman took home first in the 190-pound class for Paint Valley, and in the process also secured his 100th career win during the tournament.

For the Warriors, Austyn McWhorter won the 150-pound title as a freshman, and four of his five wins came by pin. Three of those pins came in the period. For Unioto, freshman Michael Gibson won the 126-pound title after winning all four of his matches by pin.
