Western Michigan beats Buffalo 71-68 in a record-tying 7 overtimes
Jarvion Franklin won Western Michigan the game vs. Buffalo. And denied Western Michigan and Buffalo an overtime record all to themselves.
The running back’s touchdown gave Western Michigan a 71-68 win over the Bulls in seven overtimes on Saturday in what’s now the highest-scoring game in college football history. The game is the fourth to go to seven overtimes at college football’s top level. No game has gone to eight overtimes.
Buffalo kicked a field goal to start the seventh overtime, meaning those of us that wanted the game to go on forever needed Western Michigan to do the same. Alas, Franklin scored on a 12-yard touchdown to keep the game at a record-tying seven overtimes.
The record for most points in a game was set in 2016 when Pitt beat Syracuse 76-61. It lasted less than a year, as the combined 139 points are two more than what the Panthers and Orange accumulated.
The game had a ridiculous moment in the first overtime too. When Western Michigan tight end Donnie Ernsberger caught a touchdown pass his sister ran out on the field to celebrate with him. The only problem is that the game was not over. Ernsberger’s TD ended up tying the game with the extra point because Buffalo had scored seven points to start overtime.
Ernsberger’s sister was then escorted out of the stadium.
Buffalo quarterback Drew Anderson finished 35-of-61 passing for 597 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had three carries for 13 yards and a touchdown.
