Spring Garden's Ace Austin 21-point triple double leads Gadsden area top performers

Here are Gadsden area high school top performers for the week ending on Feb. 9, including area basketball tournament performances and from the final day of the state indoor track and field meet.

Boys basketball

Friday, Feb. 9

Spring Garden's John Welsh scored 21 points in a win over Winterboro.

Spring Garden's Jake Welsh scored 15 points.

Wednesday, Feb. 7

Glencoe's Grant Smith scored 24 points to go with 15 rebounds in a Class 3A, Area 11 title win over Westbrook Christian.

Glencoe's Garrett Morgan scored 15 points.

Westbrook Christian's Eli Edge had 22 points in a 69-51 loss to Glencoe.

Tuesday, Feb. 6

Geraldine's Jaxon Colvin scored 16 points in a 72-71 double-overtime win over Plainview to claim the Class 3A, Area 14 title.

Geraldine's Connor Johnson scored 16 points.

Geraldine's Redick Smith scored 15 points.

Geraldine's Lucas Bryant scored 15 points to go with nine rebounds.

Plainview's Owen Wilborn scored 18 points in a 72-71 loss to Geraldine.

Plainview's Sawyer Wilborn scored 14 points.

Sardis's Kason Moore scored 22 points in a 72-59 win over Douglas to claim the Class 5A, Area 13 title.

Sardis's Eli Morton scored 19 points.

Glencoe's Aiden Cornutt scored 19 points in a 79-49 win over Ohatchee.

Glencoe's Garrett Morgan scored 14 points.

Southside's Cayden Reason scored 10 points with 12 rebounds in a 57-49 win over Lincoln.

Southside's Mason Stephens scored 13 points with 11 rebounds.

Westbrook Christian's Cooper King scored 25 points in a 68-51 win over Hokes Bluff.

Westbrook Christian's Eli Edge scored 19 points.

Sardis's Carson Gillilan scored 18 points in a 81-28 win over Crossville.

Sardis's Eli Morton scored 15 points.

Ashville's Parker Smith scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds in a 55-52 loss to Oneonta.

Ashville's JB Potter scored 16 points.

Saturday, Feb. 3

Cherokee County's Alex Johnson placed fourth in the 400-meter at states with a time of 51.32 seconds. He placed sixth with a personal best of 7.18 in the 60-meter.

Guntersville's Cooper Morrison placed second at states with a high jump with a jump 6-feet and fourth in the long jump with a jump of 20-feet, 1-inch.

Girls basketball

Friday, Feb. 9

Guntersville's Tazi Harris scored 10 points in a 39-32 loss to Southside.

Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair scored 23 points with seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in a 74-30 win over LaFayette.

Sand Rock's Zoey Handy scored 19 points.

Southside's Laylah Davis led the way with 14 points in a 39-32 win over Guntersville.

Southside's Grace Anne Rose scored 10 points with seven rebounds.

Southside's Madison Shaw scored 11 points.

Susan Moore's Lani Smallwood scored 25 points in a 76-30 win over Weaver.

Spring Garden's Ace Austin scored 21 points with 16 assists, 10 rebounds and five steals in an 88-20 win over Wadley.

Spring Garden's Chloe Rule scored 25 points to go with six rebounds.

Tuesday, Feb. 6

Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair scored 23 points in a 58-28 win over Fyffe, to take the Class 2A, Area 12 title.

Sand Rock's Kennedy Henderson scored 10 points with 14 rebounds.

Southside's Grace Anne Rose scored 11 points with nine rebounds in a 63-24 win over Alexandria for the Class 5A, Area 11 title.

Southside's Madison Shaw scored 13 points.

Southside's Sarakate Yancey scored 13 points.

Monday, Feb. 5

Ashville's Lydia Northam scored 20 points in a 38-22 win over Etowah for the Class 4A, Area 11 title.

Ashville's Molly Northam scored 11 points and had nine rebounds.

Spring Garden's Ace Austin scored 18 points with five rebounds, four assists and six steals in a 69-14 area championship win over Cedar Bluff.

Spring Garden's Libby Brown scored 26 points with four steals.

Saturday, Feb. 3

Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair scored 14 points in a 61-26 win over Gaston.

Sand Rock's Peyton Johnson scored 14 points.

Sand Rock's Chloe Stephens scored 12 points.

Sand Rock's Zoey Handy scored 10 points with eight rebounds.

Spring Garden's Ace Austin scored 11 points with eight assists and seven steals in a 88-19 win over JCA.

Spring Garden's Kristen Lewis led the way with 16 points.

Saturday, Feb. 3

Cherokee County's Mary Hayes Johnson took home two state titles at the indoor meet. The first coming in the 400-meter with a time of 58.11 seconds and the second coming the 60-meter hurdle with a time of 9.28 seconds. She placed sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.99 seconds.
